Trunk show...

It's Monday already! The weekend seemed like it flew by.  Maybe because I was a busy bee, but I still had lots of fun especially on Saturday (my trunk show) and Sunday (church + Mary Mary concert).  I didn't take very many pictures at the trunk show because I had more attendee's than expected (which was good) and I was trying to make sure I met everyone that I didn't know, and I wanted to catch up with friends who I hadn't seen in a while.  I received some very positive feedback about my Spring Collection, and I'm eager to share my designs with you all very soon.  I'm still tweaking some of the designs and creating additional pieces, but the launch is coming.

What did you all do this weekend? Please share!

*A few of the trunk show pictures at my house on Saturday. Fun times!

Coming soon.....

to Bohemian Spirit Jewelry...Agate Necklaces for spring.  :)

Happy Friday!

I follow several blogs, and I always wonder what the person who writes the blog sounds like. So just in case you've ever wondered what I sound like (maybe you don't even care.. lol!), I decided to make a quick video.  It felt kinda strange talking to my computer, but I figured since I'm being "fearless" this year....why not do it (shoulder shrug)?

Well I'm in serious prep mode for my Trunk show tomorrow.  I'll be debuting some pieces from the BSJ spring collection!  I'll have pictures to show on Monday. :)  Have a great weekend!

Getting organized

Hey there! I was so exhausted yesterday that I decided to take a day off from posting.  I've been moving at lightning speed since the New Year began. Funny thing is I didn't make any resolutions, but I did decide that this would be the year that I made more fearless decisions about my business. But with those fearless decisions comes a lack of sleep, a calendar filled with events, meetings, and deadlines, several orders to make and fill, and of course I must stay on top of my most important jobs as a wife and mother. It really is a crazy balancing act.  So I've been trying to get more organized by jotting things down in my calendar as soon as I find out about them.  It seems so easy, but I have the hardest time doing that (it's one of my many shortcomings...forgetting events that have been planned forever) and it drives my hubby nuts!

So my biz tip for the day would be to stay organized! Lol! I usually just purchase those $1 calendars. One to carry in my purse, and one for my office. Below are a few of the things I have coming up that will probably keep me from posting any real decent content on this blog for the next few weeks. Lol! Sorry....just keeping it real ;)

Display your heart....

My hubby and I don't really celebrate Valentine's Day, but we understand that it may symbolize a special day for some folks and I personally think that's awesome. I know the best thing to do is love one another everyday, but I do understand that life gets in the way and we don't always make time to connect with our mates.  So for those of you who will be connecting on February 14th with your boo...I've added a special piece to the Bohemian Spirit collection for you to wear on Love day. :)

*Oh and if you happen to stop by and read my blog here and there, or everyday....I truly thank you! I would love to hear more comments. It lets me know that these topics are enjoyable (or not) for you all, or even better...you can join the blog by clicking the FOLLOW button over there -------> and subscribing to the blog by entering your email information.

Bohemian Spotlight....

She's beautiful, talented, and such a kind soul.  I've seen her in concert and was blown away by her mature voice.  Some of you may remember Amel Larrieux from Groove Theory back in the day. They had the hit single "Tell me." Well Amel has made several other CD's and I believe I own them all! Just can't get enough of this Boho chick!

Weekend Stuff

I had a really amazing weekend! The concert I mentioned that I was attending here was awesome!  I got the chance to meet my client Pamela and her super sweet hubby Chizzy (the guitarist for the wailers).  They were so cool, and made my husband and I feel very comfortable being in "rock star" presence. I was also able to meet "Family Man" who is an original member of Bob Marley and The Wailers!!! I was just in awe...such a great night!

But that's not all! lol! Sunday was good as well. Church was great, then bead shopping in Los Angeles with my mom, and lunch at Urth Caffe'...Yum!  I've been getting my design ideas together for spring, and I hope to have them ready to roll mid-February (since I now have most of the beads I need) along with my full men's collection.  We'll see how that goes...since time is not on my side some days. :)

On a lighter note...

It is "Free to be Friday" posting day, so I wanted to lighten it up a bit from my post here and here.  I actually have plans this weekend! Yay!!! Although there is work to be done, I am allowing myself a fun day :)  Tonight my hubby and I will be checking out the Wailers in concert....I'm so excited! I've been creating jewelry for the guitarist of the group, and his beautiful wife and they have invited me to come as their guest and check out the show.  I can't wait to meet them both...pretty exciting huh?

Hopefully I'll be able to get some good pictures to show you all on Monday!

I hope you all have a Jammin' weekend! :)

Get free (Part II)....

Yesterday I wrote a blog post about my journey as a business owner, and some of the trials I've experienced while trying to find my way.  If you didn't read Part I, you can read it here to catch up.

So today's post will be about what I did to finally get to a place where I was confident in my abilities as a business owner, a designer, and as a person who had a product that could sell in this economy.

I noticed that when my business wasn't doing anything (selling, being recognized, very few web hits) I began to feel desperate and uninspired. I would sit around and think about the businesses that were thriving and think...maybe I'll just start doing that instead of this. But the bottom line was that doing something because someone else was doing it just wasn't my path or my true passion. I began noticing that I was impatient and wanted quick results in my business,  and therefore I had not properly prepared myself to run a business.  Out of frustration, I started asking myself questions.  Why am I in such a rush to make a lot of money, to be "successful", to be in a magazine, or my jewelry in a boutique, etc.?  And it finally clicked for me.  I was so busy comparing myself to other people's success, that I never really took the time to plan my own success! The key word here is plan.  I had never planned.  Sure I'd skimmed a few business books, but I'd never sat down with a pen and paper and really mapped out my career as a business owner. I didn't even know where to begin to do that, but I figured it was worth a shot to give planning a try. Although I was uninspired at the time, I still felt excited at the thought of making jewelry. Realizing my lack of preparation and unpreparedness led me to my "lightbulb" moment!  I decided to find a business seminar to attend and boy, oh boy did it help! I learned so much, and the tools and encouragement I walked away with gave me the energy to seek inspiration for my business.  The first thing I learned was that BSJ needed to be evaluated with a fine tooth comb and I started asking myself questions about my business. Would I purchase my own jewelry? Was my brand (business cards, website, logo, blog, packaging, tone, slogan, etc.) conveying a uniform message? Who exactly was I trying to sell my jewelry to (target market)? What type of woman or man did I want to wear my jewelry? When I thought of Bohemian Spirit Jewelry what colors did I associate with that name? Was my pricing competitive and priced for quality and not just to get people to purchase? (*sometimes pricing your items too low can be bad for your business because it makes people think your items must be poorly made if they are so cheap). Once I realistically answered those questions, I realized that my brand was all over the place and was in desperate need of some fixing.  For me, this was the beginning of LOTS of hard work, but it was the jump start to some of the greatest changes I've ever made for my business.  I promise you that once I was able to answer the above questions, and slowly make improvements to my brand, my sales increased and my business became more recognizable.

I also want to say that I didn't have a lot of money to make changes to my business!  It was never easy, and I didn't just call someone and say revamp my business and slap some cash down on their table.  I did it slow and steady.  A little bit at a time.  I wanted Bohemian Spirit to be a true representative of what I was selling.  Unique, inspirational, liberating, and free-spirited type jewelry. I knew that women who wore my jewelry would be reminded of their uniqueness, their freedom, and so I sought people to help me brand my business so that it would have that exact effect!  I'm still improving my business daily, and I always give it 110%! This is not a play business, a fake business, an on and off business, a closed on Monday open on Tuesday business but a real business that I take seriously and that has my name behind it.  I'm really proud of where Bohemian Spirit is today and I'm excited (and continuously inspired) by where it's going!

So if you are in a rut that you can't seem to get out of, I suggest you truly evaluate whether your business is one that you are dedicated to tweaking and re-tweaking until you get it right.

Below are just some step by step tools and resources that have helped me get free from being in a rut and uninspired as a small business owner.  Good luck with your journey and remember slow and steady wins the race ;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.  Pray ~ Seek guidance about your decision to maintain your business, and be ready to receive the answers when they are presented to you.
2.  Seek Knowledge/Learn ~ Be willing to do your own business research. It's okay to find a fellow business owner in your creative field and ask a few questions, but don't abuse their kindness or be willing to pay them a consultant fee to assist you further.  It's important for you to do research because every business is different and if you want to excel then you should find what works best for you.  Read, take classes, seek product feedback, find a mentor, intern, etc.
3.  Work Hard ~ Don't look for fame and fortune to come knocking at your door. If you are not willing to pour your heart into your business then your results (sales) will be lackluster. Don't be afraid of losing a little sleep in order to build your business.
4. Like Minds/Encouragers ~ Surround yourself with like minded individuals who encourage and understand your struggles, joys, etc.  I have friends who don't own businesses, but they are always there to lend an ear when things are going great or horrible.
5.  Get Out! ~ Don't complain about being uninspired when you aren't looking for inspiration.  Go to the museum, the park, the book store or somewhere where you can be stimulated to create! I always go to women's boutiques when I feel uninspired.  I like to look at other jewelry designs, color coordination, and seasonal trends to get inspired.
6.  Invest ~ Invest some money into your business.  I know this is easier said than done, but a little investment can go a long way! Just do one thing at a time.  Maybe order some nice business cards first.  Then get a professional logo created, and then start looking at your packaging, and so on.  There's nothing more rewarding than having a client tell you that they not only love your products but that your packaging or website are really nice too.
Get free...
Those of you who have been reading my blog since 2008 (when it was originally named Brace Yourself Boutique Blog) may have noticed the various transformations this business has undergone.  Recently I changed the name of my business to Bohemian Spirit, but prior to that I've made several changes in several areas. I had 3 different websites, 2 logo's, 4-5 color schemes, and the list goes on (all within 2 years of being in business). Lol!  I've also participated in numerous and costly trade and vendor shows trying to find myself...or my business self.  Owning BSJ has been one of the most unbelievable journey's, and I have learned so much along the way.  There were many moments of self-doubt and days when I just wanted to shut down my business.  When I think back on the reasons I was ready to quit, it really shakes me up.  I thought because no one was buying my jewelry, no one was reading my blog (that I was pouring my heart into), no one was commenting on my jewelry posts on facebook, no one, no one, no one!!!!....you get the picture right?  I never officially shut down my business, but I definitely shut down inside.  My creativity was thrown off, and I couldn't understand why everyone else was persevering and not me. Basically I was throwing myself a pity party, and no one was attending that either!  If this story resonates with any of you, please continue to read because I'm going to explain to you how I got out of this rut, and what I did to uplift myself, and began to realize how to move forward.
I'll be posting more tomorrow, so please stop by for the rest of the story.  To be continued........ :)
Bohemian Spotlight
The apple definitely doesn't fall far from the tree.  Zoe Kravitz, daughter of two of the hippest bohemians in Hollywood (Lenny Kravitz & Lisa Bonet) is blazing her own bohemian fashion trails.  I really love her style and her "I don't give a what" fashion sense.  She always looks as if she just woke up and threw on the first thing she saw in her closet....and I think it absolutely works for her!
Rings and things
Hey everyone! I can't believe that Friday is here already....just seems like the weeks are flying by.  Do any of you have grand plans for the weekend?  If so, please share because I'll have to live vicariously through you since I have work up to my ears this weekend.  I'm not complaining though...In fact I'm quite excited because I've been putting the finishing touches on my line sheets (itemized merchandise sheets that are provided to stores/boutiques who are interested in your product(s)) to submit to two very hip boutiques (can you see me cheesing through the blog)?  I'm so thrilled to even be considered "hot" enough to sell my wares in both locations.  Hopefully I'll be able to reveal more if they consider stocking Bohemian Spirit Jewelry.  I'll be hoping and praying for the best.
Since I'll be indoors most of the weekend, maybe I'll purchase one of the rings below that I've been eyeballing online from House of Harlow. :)  Have a great weekend and happy MLK day!
Bohemian Spotlight
I'm gonna kick off the Boho Girl Spotlight with one of my favorite bohemian chicks, actress Tracee Ellis Ross.  She has such great style, and I love the way she mixes bohemian and chic pieces together and make them work! BSJ thinks Tracee Ellis is an ultimate Boho Chick!
And the winner is...
First, I want to start by saying that I really enjoyed reading each and every one of your comments.  I was truly touched by your most memorable moments, and sometimes felt like I was experiencing those joys or triumphs with you.
If you don't mind, I'd like to share a great moment of mine in 2010.  My most memorable moment was in November of 2010 when my husband planned a surprise anniversary dinner for me, and invited all of our closest friends to our favorite restaurant for dinner and dancing.  I truly had no idea it was all going down (and it's hard to keep stuff from me).  He even picked out the dress I wore that evening, and told me that he just loved seeing me in it (which he does).  When we arrived everyone was in a private room in the back of the restaurant, and when I walked in I literally froze and scanned the room face by face.  I was so shocked that I didn't even cry until 15 minutes later.  It was one of those moments when I  realized that I have so many great friends and people who truly love us, care and have our back through it all.  It was very surreal and definitely a moment I will never forget.  The hubs got HUGE kudos for that evening :)
I thank you all for participating, and I want to encourage you to continue to post on my blog.  I love reading your comments and hearing your feedback.  It really makes my day :)
Now on to the winner.......
