Bohemian Biz Spotlight

I'm really digging Janelle Wilfong....her humor, art, free-isms, and I'm happy she is in the spotlight today. While browsing through her shop Janetics Ink I found so many pieces that I love and they totally match the impression I got from her through our emails and this interview. I love when I get a feel for someone (whether I know them or not) and what their personality is like, and then you see their work..... and BAM! It is a direct extension of them and exactly what you expected. Anyone know what I mean??? Anywho, check out Janelle's interview...I'm sure you'll think she's just as cool as I do. For goodness sakes she Hoola Hoops.....how can you not like a woman who hoola hoops? Enjoy!

1. I won't ask your age, but what was your favorite t.v. show to watch growing up?
 Roseanne/ Cosby/ 3s Company/ Donna reed; Ozzie and Harriet

 2. What gave you the AUDACITY to start a business?

It all started with an incompetent cervix.  I have difficult pregnancies (all 3). Had a lot of time on my hands on bed rest. I've always been creative. I come from a very creative family.
When I had to quit my job at a very expensive boutique hotel, I was already dabbling in craft shows.
Now with 3 kids and an even tighter belt, my husband encouraged me to take the plunge. We really had nothing to lose.  Craft shows were paying in one day what I made in a week checking in pretentious guests.
After my son was born, I got a business license. He's now 2 1/2.

3. Out of all the creative businesses you could have chosen to start, why did you choose jewelry/ painting/ graphic design?

Because I love to create. I am always spinning many plates. Looking back, it was inevitable. When I worked in offices, I spent more time utilizing office supplies for collages and other craft projects.
I dabble in everything that I get my hands on.

4. Lots of people want to be their own boss, however they don't understand that it really Is harder then it seems. What's your typical work day like?

I'm a mom of 3 and my days are pretty random and are due for more organization. I make time whenever there is time.
Editing photos during laundry. Filling out show applications during our son's nap- time. Completing 4 hour studio sessions after kids all go to sleep. Blogging whilst lying in bed or taking a much needed bubble bath.
There are 24 useable hours in a day.

5. How do you find the strength to persevere when the challenges seem to outweigh the rewards?

I find it in my husband and close friends in and out the industry. Positively and enthusiasm from my support system fuels me.

6. What inspires you?

Hula hooping, nature, a bad joke, witnessing the creative process (via a friend's studio/ podcast/ documentary); graffiti; yo gabbagabba; 1970s; post apocalypse  (like MadMax, DemolitionMan); music; the materials I use

7. What's your go to wine when it's time to unwind?

Hula hooping is how I unwind. I've been hoop dancing since July 2010. It consumes me. Stirs up the creative pot.

8. When it comes to the following words, what advice would you give?

*Work: a creative job is not a job. It's you life. Love it or leave it.
*Self: be confident, be kind, be resilient
*Life: its a circus. Sometimes you drop the spinning plates but the show must go on. Start a dog act if spinning plates becomes stagnant
*Love: be confident, be kind, be patient
*Friends: they are necessary. They give honest feedback and fill u when your down

9. I define a Bohemian Spirit as someone who is free, unique, and unafraid to make her own stamp on the world. Why are you a Bohemian Spirit?

I'm unconventional. I savor change like a warm blanket. I wander however I am not lost. The world is full of 7 billion and I respect every one of their fantastic stories... I just want to become an urban legend ;)
