Bohemian Biz Spotlight...No. 2

Hello everyone! Sorry for not post a quick meal yesterday...but I'll definitely get one up this week some time.  Anyhoo, I hope you all are ready for today's 2nd BBS feature of 2012!

The talented woman featured today will tell you that art curating "found her" recently.  But I'll tell you that I met her a few months ago and I truly believed that she had been curating art galleries all over the world for many years. Today's Bohemian Biz Spotlight Mary Roy is a sweet soul who has a great eye for design, art, and her gallery Loft 204 (which just happens to be across the hall from me...how lucky am I?) is always filled with beautiful pieces that somehow always seem to reflect her spirited yet quirky personality. Check out her spotlight and show her some free spirited love!

I won't ask your age, but what was your favorite t.v. show to watch
growing up?

I Love Lucy! Reruns, of course.

What or who gave you the courage to start a business?

Unequivocally, God.

Out of all the creative businesses you could have chosen to start, why did you choose an art gallery?

First, it chose me. I acquired it from a friend, but I was drawn to it as a jumping off place for me to invest in people who create, or who desire to create.

Lots of people want to be their own boss for obvious reasons, however they don't understand that it takes a great deal of commitment, and hard work. What's your work day like and how do you stay focused?

My work day is doing double duty as a graphic designer and gallery owner. I have to set up systems for myself in order to stay focused. For instance, I allot 15 minutes each morning to transfer ideas from my "capture tool" into my calendar. I try to put things into categories and then categories into timetables. It can sound complicated, but it is the only way I can stay focused and not get overwhelmed. Read "Getting Things Done." Having a life coach helps too!

How do you find the strength to persevere when the challenges seem to outweigh the rewards?

I get on my knees. It sounds corny, but honestly, I cannot do this by myself. God has to be in it.

What inspires you?

People. Art. Music. Books. Friends. Words. Letters. Mostly, I am inspired by people who want to create.

What's your go to wine when it's time to unwind? :)

Wine or Whine? ha ha. I love the red or white Lambrusco from Trader's. Also the Menage a Trois red.

Most people who want to start a business don't know where to begin...any suggestions?

"Starting On A Shoestring," "Getting Things Done,"  "Duct Tape Marketing," and hire a coach.

When it comes to the following words, what advice would you give?

Work: Have integrity in every way.
Self: Be who you are and love who you are being.
Life: Enjoy the process.
Love: Love the unlovely.
Friends: Always be loyal.

I define a Bohemian Spirit as someone who is free, unique, and unafraid to make her own stamp on the world. Why are you a Bohemian Spirit?

I rely on my artistic instincts and allow them to lead me in my choices, my friends, my decision making in business and my personal life.

Mary Roy
Loft 204
I curate a contemporary art gallery, consign local functional art in my gallery store and design and manage creative workshops in the gallery space. I am also a freelance graphic designer.

  1. Mary I really enjoyed this interview. Besides you being planted in your faith, I also LOVE your statement "Love the unlovely" which is one of the hardest things to do. Keep up the great work girly!

  2. "First it chose me." I love that. I'm hoping something choose me too in the near future. This was a great interview.
