I've received at least 10 emails over the past 2 weeks from women who need advice about starting a business, or building their business. I'm always shocked when people email me for advice and/or guidance. I'm absolutely flattered, and I always welcome it! By all means, I am no expert. I've made some of the silliest mistakes while building Bohemian Spirit Jewelry (formerly Brace Yourself Boutique), and I've even had days where I almost threw in the towel. But I've definitely learned many lessons and just like the women who've emailed me...I've emailed many women myself while trying to figure out what the heck I was doing with my business.
So below I've listed 7 things I know for sure about building a business. These are things that I've learned and figured out along the way. As my husband would say, "You are building a plane while flying it." Lol!
Email me if you have a business question you'd like to ask. I may not have the answer, but I may know someone who does! I can be reached at: Bohemianspiritjewelry{at}gmail{dot}com.

1. Put your thoughts on paper. Build a notebook of ideas and what you admire about other businesses.
2. Be authentic! There is nothing worse than trying to be like someone else. It comes off phony, and it's not cool AT ALL!
3. Be legit. Create a business name, get your business license, seller's permit, etc. Make sure you start off on the right foot. It sets the tone for how your business will commence, and how you are seen as a business woman.
4. Make sure you have a web presence. These days you can build your own website. It takes time but it can be done. When I first started my business I built my own site because I didn't have money to pay a web developer. You can do it! Just keep it simple and uncluttered.
5. Purchase business cards. If you want to be in business, you need to act like it. A professional always has a business card and as a business owner, you should to!
6. If you don't know, ask! Believe me, you will save yourself from several business mishaps by seeking help from people who are experienced.
7. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. If you love the business you are creating and you believe it will be successful...Have FAITH! Everyone has their time to shine, and you will have yours too!

Awesome post My! I want to thank you for your advice and giving me that extra push to leap. You are an amazing business woman and I love your spirit! You don't have to know a lot to help others and clearly people feel as if they can trust you and respect your opinion. That says a lot!
ReplyDeleteYour new look is so chic and girly, just like you.
